There are no railways in Laos apart from the Thai rail extension from Nong Khai. This will soon change with the construction of the China-Laos railway which will connect Kunming to Vientiane. The railway will start at Boten, then pass through Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. This is expected to be completed by 2021.

This and other proposed railways can be found at the Laos Railways Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Southeast Asia Train Pass?

Southeast Asia is a long way from being developed enough to offer a railway pass that would be similar to the Eurail Pass in Europe. The railway network of Southeast Asia is not extensive enough to warrant such a ticket, and there are very few international connections.

Can I get a train from Singapore to KL?

Technically you can travel by train from Singapore to KL, but there is no direct service. There used to be a direct Singapore-KL service, but that has since been discontinued. The trip now requires three trains, starting at Woodlands on the border, which is just a shuttle to Johor Bahru. It would be less hassle to get the bus.

There is a new high-speed railway being planned for the two cities, so I don’t expect any improvements until this is operational. Travel between KL and Singapore was the worlds busiest air route in 2018, so there is definitely demand for a HST.

Can I travel from India to Myanmar by train?

Even though the two countries are neighbours there is no rail link yet. There are plans to build a line from Impal in India to Tamu in Myanmar. This would provide an eventual connection from Delhi to Yangon.

Future Southeast Asia Railways Project

One of my projects at Nomadic Notes has been to map the proposed railways of Southeast Asia.

The latest map is the Southeast Asia current and proposed railways [2017]

The black lines on the map represent railways that are currently operating, while the red lines are proposed lines.

This map is based off my previous project which depicted Southeast Asia railways as a subway-style map.
