Flight Review: VietJet Air – Ho Chi Minh City to Hong Kong

June 26, 2018 By James Clark

Flight Review: VietJet Air – Ho Chi Minh City to Hong Kong

Flight: VietJet Air VJ 876
From: Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) To: Hong Kong (HKG)

I flew with VietJet Air from Ho Chi Minh City to Hong Kong. I compared flights online with Skyscanner, and Vietjet was the best option for me. I took the same flight last year, and like last year the combination of price and time of day won out.

The total price with a checked bag totalled $84.07 USD. It’s a great price but I wish they would just advertise the real price with taxes included. If you can’t not pay it then it should be included.

Flight booking

There is no online check in with Vietjet so I went to the airport early to check in. I was there before the usual 3 hour opening, but with so many international flights departing from SGN the counter was open to all flights. I was able to check in without a queue.

The flight departs at 14:40 and arrives at 18:20 (one hour ahead in Hong Kong) for a total travel time of 2H, 40M.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport has long ago ran out room to accommodate every flight with an airbridge, so most budget airlines get the bus to the aircraft parked on the tarmac.

A Hong Kong immigration card is provided onboard.

Some Vietjet flights have in-cabin advertising, all part of the low cost airline experience.

Pocari Sweat

Being a budget airline there is no free meal or drink service on Vietjet. You can either prebook a meal or order onboard. I was already dreaming of my first meal back in Hong Kong, so I didn’t think of ordering anything.

I got a coffee for 40,000 VND ($1.74 USD).

The flight arrived on time at HKG airport. As with SGN, the plane was parked on the tarmac without an airbridge. Fortunately it had stopped raining when we arrived.

Overall it was a good flight to Hong Kong, especially given the flight was under $100USD.
