Guesthouse Review: RedDoorz @ Kebon Kacang, Jakarta – indonesia

Guesthouse Review: RedDoorz Kebon Kacang, Jakarta - indonesia

Hotel Name: RedDoorz @ Kebon Kacang.
Address: Jl. Kebon Kacang IV No. 43A, Tanah Abang, Jakarta, Indonesia.

I stayed at RedDoorz @ Kebon Kacang Jakarta, Indonesia. I booked online at the rate of 10.32 USD per night, which was one of the cheapest private rooms I could find in Jakarta.

Kebon Kacang is in Central Jakarta and pretty much in the centre of the action. This area is next to Jalan. M.H. Thamrin, which is the main thoroughfare of the city. The problem is that there aren’t many ways to access this area from Thamrin, so it feels like it is tucked away. If the city landscaped the main road and provided pedestrian access it would be an amazing area. Anyway, enough about my thoughts on Jakarta’s urban design problems.

If you are new to Jakarta then I wouldn’t stay here first (here is my list of the best areas to stay in Jakarta). I stayed here because I was already here and I wanted to try the area out. I was also curious because the hotel booking sites show many budget rooms in this area, so I was wondering if it had become the new backpacker area (it hasn’t).

The area itself is quiet with many nice little houses. It’s just hard to get in and out of with a car. I got a Grab Taxi here during the day so it wasn’t so bad.

From the front entrance you can see the skyscrapers of Thamrin.

The guesthouse is in a nondescript house that blends in with the rest of the residential street.

There is a basic reception area, and once again I was glad to arrive in the day time because there didn’t seem to be people around at night.

10 dollars doesn’t go far in Jakarta these days, but on the other hand where else in the world are you going to get a private room in a capital city for 10 bucks. The room was the length of a single bed, with enough room on one side to place your bag.

There was enough room for a bedside table, and the room had no window. There was an exhaust fan in the wall that let in outside light. There is free wifi here and I had no problem with the reception. There is also air conditioning, and was needed at all times because the room was too hot without it. The room would have been fine with a fan, which is the maddening thing about modern Southeast Asia. Not every room needs A/C.

The room had a private bathroom. It was small, but other than that it was in ok condition.

This is a residential area, but there are convenience stores nearby. The guesthouse is about 10 minutes walk from Grand Indonesia Mall, and 15 minutes away from Bundaran HI (the roundabout that marks the centre of modern Jakarta). This is where the metro station is on the North-South Line, and it’s a good transport hub.

Overall this was suitable for transiting through Jakarta, as I was doing. I got an early taxi from here to the airport. It’s a good option for backpackers if you just want a private room, but I would stick to the old backpacker street of Jalan Jaksa (even though there are no backpackers these days). If you are new to Jakarta then refer to my guide for picking places to stay.
