Grandma Lu’s Saigon Japan Town – Bed and Banh Mi in Ho Chi Minh City

July 29, 2025 By James Clark

Grandma Lu's Saigon Japan Town

Hotel Name: Grandma Lu’s Saigon Japan Town.
Address: 18 Thai Van Lung, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Hotel review of Grandma Lu’s Saigon Japan Town – budget backpacker bed and banh mi in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

I stayed at Grandma Lu’s Saigon Japan Town in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I booked online at the rate of 240,862 VND ($9.21 USD) per night, and I booked it for its price and location in Ho Chi Minh City.

Grandma Lu’s is a banh mi restaurant with accommodation. There is another branch in the city, but this location in the Japan Town area appealed to me.

[If you are new to the city, here’s my guide on where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.]

Grandma Lu’s is located on Thai Van Lung, near the corner of Le Thanh Ton. This is an easy location to find, unlike some of the alleys that the Japan Town location is famous for.

Grandma Lu’s is a budget operation, so there is no reception. There are key boxes at the entrance with a separate box for each room. You get sent a code after 2pm to get the key. This will be a problem if you arrive early and want to leave your bags until you can check in.

The staff at the restaurant were on hand to help if anything goes wrong, but I had no problem checking in.

Grandma Lu’s has budget rooms with shared bathrooms, so it is more like an upgraded hostel. Being in the Japan Town area, the rooms also reminded me of the small hotel rooms of Tokyo.

I booked a “Single Room” with a window. Other rooms appeared to be cubicles in the hallway. The room had a single bed and desk, with enough room to leave your bags on the floor. The room has air conditioning and there is wifi from multiple points.

The bathroom is a typical hostel style arrangement.

I saw the cleaner on the floor at different times of the day, and the bathroom was keep in an orderly condition.

The accommodation area is reached by walking through the restaurant. The restaurant is open early as well, so it was convenient to have a breakfast banh mi here. You could say that Grandma Lu’s is a Bed and Banh Mi.

Grandma Lu’s Saigon Japan Town is a good option for backpackers who would like a private room instead of a dorm room. This is also a good area to stay if you don’t want to be in the backpacker area.
