Hotel Review: Freedom Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam

July 20, 2025 By James Clark

Freedom Hotel

Hotel Name: Freedom Hotel.
Address: 269 Pham Ngu Lao, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Hotel review of the Freedom Hotel, a budget hotel in the Pham Ngu Lao backpacker area of Ho Chi Minh City.

I stayed at the Freedom Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I booked online at the rate of 333,976 VND ($12.78 USD) per night, and I booked it for its price and location in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Freedom Hotel is on Pham Ngu Lao Street, which is also the name of this area. Pham Ngu Lao is referred to as the backpacker area for all the many hostels and cheap hotels between Pham Ngu Lao St and Bui Vien St. I have a guide on where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City that explains the areas in detail.

The good thing about this area is that it is opposite 23/9 Park and close to Ben Thanh Market (the historic central market of the city). Ben Thanh Station of the HCMC Metro is also here, so it’s a handy area to stay.

One thing to note about staying in the Pham Ngu Lao area is that many of the cheap hotels are in the side alleys, which can be hard to find at first. The Freedom Hotel is right on Pham Ngu Lao, facing 23/9 Park, so it’s easy to find. It’s also next to 7-Eleven, making it even more convenient.

Another thing to note about the cheap hotels of Pham Ngu Lao is that the cheapest places are a bit worn out. This should be no problem for the average backpacker, but the quality is noticeable compared to cheap hotels in provincial cities.

The Freedom Hotel shares the reception with a spa salon, which is normal in this area.

I booked a “Superior Double Room” with windows. I wasn’t sure if the room would be facing the park or the side. The room had two windows, but they were both near other buildings in this tightly-built area.

The bed was comfortable and the room had the option of fan or air-conditioning.

The bathroom was big but not in great condition. The fittings were broken and the sink area was too small.

Overall the Freedom Hotel is most suitable for backpackers who want a break from hostel rooms in the backpacker area.

Check prices for the Freedom Hotel or search for more hotels in Ho Chi Minh City.
