Floating in the Dead Sea – Jordan

June 29, 2012 By James Clark 5 Comments

Floating in the Dead Sea - Jordan

For as long as I have been listening to travellers tell tales about travel, floating on the water of the Dead Sea in Jordan (or Israel) always seems to make the list of things to do in ones life time.

I can now say that having floated in/on the Dead Sea, it is one of those experiences that has to be tried to be believed. I went into the water with the thought in the back of my mind that I might be the first person in recorded history to not float. I will defy its extra minerally saltiness and sink as if I was in ordinary sea water.

I walked out into the water until I was up to my neck, and sure enough my body weight was supported by the water. I could stand in the water with complete ease, even crossed armed and without dog paddling.

The next test was to lay flat on the water, making sure to keep my head (and especially my eyes) away from the water. Despite my best efforts to try and push my legs down, I was floating as if I was on a water bed – a bit saggy in the middle but mostly horizontal. Again, floating was effortless.

I forgot to bring a book to do the cliched photo, but you get the point in this picture.

I travelled to the Dead Sea as a guest of the Jordan Tourism Board.

I will say that this is on my Bucket List 🙂
Though, I would have to bring the book and take the cheesy, cliche photo, because I am a cheeseball like that.

You totally need to take a picture with a book/newspaper! I wish I had remembered as I’m a bit cheesy in that regard as well.

Brilliant!  It is on my list of things to do before I die for sure.  Glad it lived up to expectation 🙂
