Hotel Review: Mingle in The Shai, Hong Kong

April 1, 2015 By James Clark Leave a Comment

Mingle in The Shai, Hong Kong

Hotel Name: Mingle in The Shai
Address: 202 Shanghai Street, Jordan, Hong Kong

I stayed at the Mingle in The Shai hotel in Hong Kong. I selected it for its price and location. The rate was HKD 570 for 2 nights, which works out at about 36.75 USD per night.

When I’m looking for a cheap place to stay in Hong Kong I often end up at the Chungking Mansions. This time I wanted to stay somewhere else so this was the best rated place for the price range.

The Mingle is in the Jordan area, which is one stop north of Tsim Sha Tsui – the most popular tourist area on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. This was my first time staying in Jordan and it is a good area to stay. It is an easy walk down Nathan Road to the harbour, and there are lots of shops and markets in the area.

I’ve stayed in enough places in Hong Kong to know that the cheap places have small rooms (such as the last place I stayed at). Most cities measure real estate costs by square metre or foot. Here in Hong Kong it feels like they measure real estate value by square inch.

Mingle in The Shai - room

Having stayed in similarly small spaces in Hong Kong, this room has been well designed to make the most of every available space. The shelf that runs along the side of the wall has enough space to put personal items, and my bags were out of the way underneath this space.

The bathroom was also well laid out, and unlike anything I have stayed at at Chungking, the fittings were clean and modern.

The room came supplied with a tea and coffee set, and a flat screen TV (not that I ever watch TV in hotels). The wifi was good, with signals for three different locations.

Tea and coffee

While I appreciated the use of space and the clean, modern bedding and fittings, if you are over 6 foot you will have trouble fitting in the bed. I’m 6’1″ (185cm) and when I laid in bed I had to align my head on the pillow perfectly, just an inch from the wall, so that my feet didn’t touch the other wall. If you are taller than me then you would be sleeping sideways.

Overall this place was great value for the money, especially for Hong Kong. For me though I’m just a bit tall for this place so not sure I would stay again.

Book the Mingle in The Shai online, or search for more hotels in Hong Kong. If you haven’t been to Hong Kong I have a guide for the best areas to stay in Hong Kong.
