Guesthouse Review: Kimberley House, Georgetown – Malaysia

February 24, 2019 By James Clark

Guesthouse Review: Kimberley House, Georgetown - Malaysia

Guesthouse Name: Kimberley House.
Address: 59 Kimberley Street, George Town, Penang, Malaysia.

I stayed at Kimberley House in Georgetown, Penang. I booked online and the rate was 42.90 MYR ($10.50 USD) per night, plus a 10 MYR tax that is collected by the hotel. I picked it for its location on Kimberley Street, which is where there is a good night market. I recommend staying in the UNESCO area of Georgetown, and the Kimberley House is in the historic area.

Kimberley House

Kimberley House is in an old shophouse, and like so many of the buildings of Georgetown, the building is an experience in itself. The reception is in a cavernous room that has an old wooden archway at the end, and lots of interesting curios that make up the fabric of Georgetown.

Behind the archway of the reception is another large room, and here was an antique luggage lift. I wondered how many things like this are in all the old houses of Georgetown.

This room is a public lounge and relax area. The guesthouse is also a hostel, so this a good area to meet fellow travellers.

I got a private room with shared bathroom facilities. I usually prefer private bathroom, but in this case I was just after a cheap room. My room didn’t have a window either, which is something I try to avoid. After being in the room for a while I realised that yes, I do prefer a window. It helped that at least the room was big, and it was so high that they had built a loft bed in the room. The bed was comfortable and the fan was adequate to keep the room cool.

There were enough bathrooms and toilets in the public area, and they seemed to be kept in clean order.

There are also rooms upstairs, but I didn’t venture up there.

There is free water and a tea and coffee area in the reception. There is free wifi through out the hostel, though I had problems connecting in my room at times, and ended up out in the common area.

Tea and coffee

Overall this was an interesting place to stay in Georgetown. I prefer having a room with a window, but at such a budget price this is a good option if you are done with staying in dorm rooms and want some privacy.

Book Kimberley House online or search for more hotels in Penang.
