Guesthouse Review: Goodnight Cafe & Homestay, Penang – Malaysia

January 29, 2020 By James Clark

Guesthouse Review: Goodnight Cafe & Homestay, Penang - Malaysia

Guesthouse Name: Goodnight Cafe & Homestay.
Address: 274, Lebuh Chulia, George Town, Penang, Malaysia.

I stayed at Goodnight Cafe & Homestay in Georgetown, Penang. I was staying here for a night so I was just looking for a cheap room in a central location. The rate was 40 MYR, plus there is the 10 MYR hotel tax added after booking, so 50 MYR ($11.85 USD). This is about as cheap as it gets for a private room in Penang these days.

The Goodnight Cafe & Homestay is on the main thoroughfare of Georgetown on Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street). It’s located near the area that becomes a street food market at night, and not far from the intersection of Love Lane (the unofficial backpacker street).

As the name implies, the guesthouse is inside a cafe in an old Straits-style shophouse. The reception is part of the cafe that is open to the public.

These shophouses are long and skinny, so the chances are that most of the rooms wont have a window. With these cheap guesthouses rooms are made with cheap partition boards.

Partitioned rooms

My windowless room had a double bed with just enough space on one side for a bedside table. The room had air-conditioning, the bed was comfortable, and I had a solid wifi in my room.

Bed

The shared bathroom and toilet facilities are at the back of the building. A basic set-up, but at least it was kept in clean order.

Shared bathroom

There is a basic breakfast service of toast and coffee, though unless you are really on a budget I would make the most of Georgetown’s famous food scene and have breakfast outside.

Overall this place is most suitable for backpackers who would rather a private room instead of staying in a dorm.

Book Goodnight Cafe & Homestay online or search for more hotels in Penang. If you’re unfamiliar with Penang then read this guide first on where to stay in Georgetown Penang.
