Hotel Name: Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani
Address: 63 Snell Parade, North Beach, Durban, South Africa
I stayed at the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani in Durban, South Africa. My hotel stay was provided by South Africa Tourism (Australia) as I was attending INDABA – Africa’s largest travel trade show – with an Australian media group. This hotel review wasn’t part of the trip but I always review places I stay.
The Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani is a 4-star hotel on Durban’s Golden Mile; a stretch of beachfront to the north of the CBD. Judging from my brief stay in the city this seemed to be the ideal place to stay – just on the fringe of the CBD and right on the beach.
I enjoyed my room which had a good work desk and super comfortable bed.
Nice bathroom with a good shower.
Durban averages over 320 sunny days per year and is usually a great get away from the cold winters of Joburg and Cape Town. It just so happened that the days I was there was very wet. Still, it was great to open the curtains and look out at the view of the Indian Ocean.
Excellent buffet breakfast with the usual assortment of continental favourites and hot food, as well as a chef on hand for eggs.
The hotel offers free wifi which is limited to 500MB per day. Coming from other countries that have unlimited data I never really think about how much data I use. On my first night here I found I burnt through my allowance in 30 minutes! It turns out that my automatic backup was running, thus I ate up my credit. The allowance would be enough for most people but be mindful if you are a heavy internet user.
Overall I loved my stay here. A great hotel in a good location. Check onlines rates for the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani.
