Hotel Review: Sakura Hotel, Hat Yai – Thailand

May 23, 2024 By James Clark

Hotel review: Sakura Hotel, Hat Yai - Thailand

Hotel review of the Sakura Hotel, a budget hotel in Hat Yai Thailand.

Hotel Name: Sakura Hotel
Address: 185/1 Niphauthit 3 Rd., Hat Yai Central, Hat Yai, Thailand.

I stayed at the Sakura Hotel in Hat yai, Thailand. I booked online at the rate of 422.50 THB ($11.58 USD) per night, and I booked it for its price and location in Hat Yai.

I have been to Hat Yai before, so I am familiar with where to stay in Hat Yai. The city blocks that are to the east of the train station is the best area to stay. I was coming by train from Padang Besar, and it was an easy enough walk from the train station to the hotel.

Hat Yai is filled with unusually big hotels for a provincial city this size. The city does well with weekenders from Malaysia, and it’s the main travel hub in Southern Thailand. Many of the hotels are starting to show their age, thus there are many cheap rooms to be found. It seems even cheaper after crossing the border from Malaysia.

The hotel is on a prominent corner. After checking in I went to my room.

I booked a “Standard” room, which had a double bed with a window.

The bed was comfortable and the room was spacious. The room had air-conditioning, which was required at all times.

The room had a TV and fridge, both of which I had no use for. That was just as well, because I needed the power outlets behind the fridge. I could tell that I was staying in an older room because there weren’t enough power outlets. This was built back in the day when people weren’t travelling with multiple devices.

Free drinking water is supplied, and I was to soon find out that I would need it.

Signs of an aging hotel could also be found in the bathroom. The first giveaway was the shower in the bathtub. I don’t like this set-up, and most modern hotels don’t do this.

The other giveaway of an aging hotel was rusted water pipes. The tap water came out rusty red, so I made sure to clean my teeth with bottled water.

It was great to be in a hotel with a high floor and see the skyline of the city (this was from my floor but not my room).

I’m not sure if there was breakfast (I didn’t check) but there are some great dim sum places nearby. There was no way a hotel breakfast was going to beat that.

Overall this was a good budget hotel option if you are just looking for a cheap room. The old pipes are a concern though, and I don’t know if that was my room or the whole building.

Book the Sakura Hotel online or search for more hotels in Hat Yai.
