Hotel Review: Hotel Johny, Bajawa, Flores – Indonesia

May 22, 2014 By James Clark

Hotel Johny, Bajawa, Flores - Indonesia

Hotel Name: Hotel Johny
Address: Jl. Gajahmada, Bajawa, Flores – Indonesia.

I stayed at the Hotel Johny via a recommendation from an ojek (motorcycle taxi) who picked me up at the bus stop outside town. I’m usually reluctant to go with hotel recommendations from touts, but the price he quoted was cheaper than any of the hotels listed in Lonely Planet.

At the hotel I was offered the rate of 100,000 IDR ($8.30 USD) per night for a double room. The hotel doesn’t have a website either so I didn’t know about this option until the recommendation.

There is wifi on the premises but it wasn’t reaching my room so I had to use it from the foyer. There was a basic breakfast provided and they also booked my onward bus ticket for me.

The bathroom was what I had come to expect from a budget guest house bathroom in Flores; bucket flushing toilet, no sink, and cold shower. While a cold shower is alright in the tropics at sea level, Bajawa is 1100 metres above sea level so I was reacquainted with what it feels like to be cold in the morning. Brr.

Location wise the hotel is in the middle of what is a very small city; it’s more like a large country town. If you have one of the back rooms you will get an excellent view of Gunung Inerie.

Overall I was glad to be recommended this place as the other places didn’t seem worth the extra money. I also ended up doing a tour of Bajawa and surrounds with moto taxi man who recommended the hotel.

If you prefer to book in advance then check online for other hotels in Bajawa.

For Flores travel information here is my recommendations for a week in Flores.
