Hi James ,
I am looking at taking a job in my tho. I was wondering if you saw any western style comforts (Pubs, supermarkets or take away places) whilst you were there? After having lived in Ha Giang for quite a while I'm looking to move to a another smaller city however with maybe just a few more home comforts than Ha Giang had to offer. Any info would be appreciated

If you are in Pham Ngu Lau you will see dozens of travel agents and they are all offering the similar trip. Just walk around Pham Ngu Lau and Bui Vien St and you will see these packages advertised.

Hi Henri,

yes the cheapest options were in the backpacking area. They all seem to offer a similar price so just ask around and you will soon get the idea of prices offered. As I was just picking a cheap transport option I wasn't looking for any other special feature. Good luck with the trip!

I did the same (or similar) tour a couple years ago. I too enjoy the off-the-beaten-path locations that are quite 'bland' but that daily 'bland' life is what I prefer because its usually not tainted (adjusted for tourists).

I think I'll start jumping off tours toward the end and adventuring off on my own like you. Sounds right down my alley!

Great article and pictures.
