I stayed at the Nam Thanh Homestay in Vinh Long, Vietnam which I booked in advance via Agoda. I was travelling around the Mekong Delta by public transport and I wanted to stay in a homestay, but not too far off the beaten track. My plan was to use the accommodation as a travel base rather than a retreat. The Nam Thanh Homestay was ideal for that purpose.

Vinh Long is a useful location to visit sights around the Delta, but the town itself has little interest for visitors. Across the river from Vinh Long is the community of An Binh, which is where Nam Thanh Homestay is located.

To get to the homestay go to the bike ferry on the Vinh Long side of the river and walk on with the bikes.

Once you cross there is a 500 VND toll (25c USD) and you will see signs directing you to the homestay. It is around 300 metres down a little path that leads through a microcosm of Delta life.

The homestay is set in a lush garden filled with tropical fruit and coconut trees.

There are private rooms and dorm rooms available. I got one of the double rooms with a shared bathroom. This was a fan room but it didn’t get too hot in the evening. The bed has a mosquito net and the room had a decent wifi connection and two power outlets.

I loved walking around the garden seeing all the fruits and being in nature. There are hammocks around the property which I made use of at siesta-o-clock.

The property has its own fishpond which it uses for its fish dinner.

The homestay has a dinner special of fish cooked in the Mekong style. If you’ve never had it’s worth trying, but I didn’t feel like a big meal and that was the only option available. It would have been nice if there were a few other options on the menu. There is not many eating options in the village either so make sure you are prepared if you don’t plan to eat here.

Breakfast was included in the room rate, which consisted of the standard Vietnamese fare of eggs and a bread roll, along with fruit and a pot of coffee. They also included some coconut rice cake desserts.

Overall I was happy with my stay here. After being in the urban jungle of Saigon for so long it was great to stay surrounded by nature and get a little glimpse into Mekong life.
