In reply to Donna. Thanks for the article and the comments planning to visit Vietnam for 10 days end of this month, and trying to pack in as many places, Seems i cud either do Hoi an & Hue or Phu Quoc, thanks to your comments, will not visit Phu Quoc.

I’m in Phu Quoc now. I’m disappointed we booked 12 nights here. It’s filthy and full of rubbish on the streets, there are so many better places and islands to visit with out the garbage lined streets and dirty beaches. I have been traveling Vietnam for 2 months now and absolutely love the place and the people. Hoi An and Hue definitely a highlight for us. Hoi An beaches are so much nicer than Phu Quoc
I personally would not return to Phu Quoc or recommend it

Thanks for this. I was getting worried reading about all the trash, construction, “boredom”, but I like this same kind of stuff, seeing the culture/nature rather than the resorts. May take up that tip of practicing motorbike riding at the old airport!

We just spent 6 nights in Phu Quoc. The first 3 nights at a resort on the north of the island and it was quite pleasant.

Then we spent 3 nights next to Long Beach. It’s easily the worst beach we saw in SE Asia. Absolutely disgusting. Rubbish, glass, and dead fish everywhere, and the water was brown (we are pretty sure it was sewerage).

We planned to spend the last 2 weeks of our holiday in Phu Quoc and instead went back to Hoi An, where the beaches are beautiful, not disgusting.

This was in September. It might be nicer at other times of the year, but we will never go back to a Phu Quoc.

The only positive things about Phu Quoc are the red snapper, and 2 cute dogs at Pineapple Bar, and Saigonese Eatery where all the food was amazing.

Love your article! I’m actually planning on getting married there next year at the JW Mariott. I’m very excited to check out this island. Born and (shortly) raised in Saigon, I’ve never ventured out of the city so I’m looking forward to seeing this part of VN!

Me and my wife are thinking about going to Phu Quoc in Jan or Feb we normally go to Thailand but finding its getting expensive for day to day things,does anyone know the prices of beers in the bars and eating out.thanks.

We are planning a trip there in November (for a week) and can’t wait! Your post helped convince us to visit there as soon as possible, before it becomes too touristy or inauthentic. Great photos too!

We recently visited Phu Quoc and like you came from Rach Gia on the ferry. There was so much construction going on the island its crazy – I fear what might become of the beautiful island in the future. We totally loved Long Beach – for us it was a good balance of tourist strip, clean but relaxing at the same time. We also hired a scooter – totally the best way to get around visit the deserted beaches.
