Things to see and do in Namibia

Sand dunes near Swakopmund, Namibia

I visited the Namibian city of Swakopmund to see the Mad Max: Fury Road filming locations. Near Swakopmund are these towering sand dunes which we visited at sunset.

At the time I had no context of how this landscape related to the movie. Two months later I saw the movie and there is a scene with one of the characters (Imperator Furiosa) on a sand dune. I almost exclaimed aloud in the cinema “aha, that’s why we went there!”

Brandberg Mountain

Brandberg Mountain in the northwestern Namib Desert is the highest mountain in Namibia. I camped here for two days at a campsite near a dry riverbed.

Cape Cross Seal Reserve, Namibia

Cape Cross on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia has one of the largest colonies of Cape Fur Seals in the world. The Cape Cross Seal Reserve is home to up to 200,000 seals, depending on the season.

Seal bleats sound like a cross between a sheep and a cow, and the collective smell of hundreds of thousands of seals was something that remained in my nostrils long after we left. There is an elevated walkway that surrounds the colony so you can get a good view without disrupting their lazy day at the beach.

Cheetah at the Cheetah Conservation Fund, Namibia

The Cheetah Conservation Fund is a conservation and research centre in Namibia, 44 km east of Otjiwarongo.

History of Namibia: From the Beginning to 1990History of Namibia: From the Beginning to 1990 by Marion Wallace.

In 1990 Namibia gained its independence after a decades-long struggle against South African rule–and, before that, against German colonialism. This book, the first new scholarly general history of Namibia in two decades, provides a fresh synthesis of these events, and of the much longer pre-colonial period.
