Travel Notes > Thailand > Hat Yai Travel Guide
Hat Yai is the largest metropolitan area in southern Thailand and a major transport hub. It’s not exactly a tourist hotspot, though its proximity to Malaysia makes it popular for shopping and vice tourism from across the border.
I visited with a flight from Chiang Mai, enroute to Penang. It was far cheaper to fly to Hat Yai and get a van to Penang than get two separate flights. Doing this option also gave me a chance to see what a working non-touristy Thai city is like.
I stayed her for two nights, spending half a day wandering around the city, and then taking a day trip to Songkla.
