Victoria Peak – The best view in Hong Kong

If you wake up in Hong Kong and the sun is shining and the sky is blue, head for the hills. Victoria Peak in particular.

The peak gives you the best view of Hong Kong, and it is worth going up the peak for the Peak Tram alone, one of the most famous tramways in the world.

The tramway is a funicular railway that runs from Central district to Victoria Peak, with some stops along the way.

At the top the tram terminates at the Peak Tower, an observation deck/shopping centre/tourist trap, which you have to pay extra to enter. You can walk around the paths at the peak and see the same view for free.

To save money (and queueing up again), buy a one-way ticket and walk back down via the park walk.

Good Idea: Free tram travel

Adelaide is the only other Australian city with a public transport system that uses trams (the other being Melbourne).

The tram runs from the city to the seaside suburb of Glenelg. If you want to use the tram in the city the tram is free.

Seen on the streets of Melbourne is this wind powered tram. No it’s not a tram with sails, but it is using power bought from a wind farm. The tram is currently running on Route 96 from St Kilda Beach to East Brunswick.

Hong Kong Trams

Double decker trams still operate on Hong Kong Island. Hongkong Tramways run the largest fleet of double-deck tramcars in the world.

Double Decker Trams to Happy Valley

For getting around Hong Kong I got a 3 day train pass which included return travel on the airport express so getting around was easy enough.

Hong Kong is made up of a peninsula of land jutting off mainland China and a number of Islands surrounding.

I went out to Lantau Island to check out the biggest bronze Buddha in the world. It was so foggy though that you could not see the top of Buddha, even from the base.

From there I got the train to Hong Kong Island. From here I got a tram going to Happy Valley. I had not intended to do so, but if you see a double decker tram that says it’s going to Happy Valley how could you not get on it. At 2HKD that’s a pretty good value tram. Happy Valley is the home of The Hong Kong Jockey Club and its world famous racecourse.

W-11 Karachi to Melbourne Tram

The W-11 is the name of the bus route in Karachi, Pakistan, where the buses are ornately decorated by the bus owners.

As part of Festival Melbourne2006, which is running during the Commonwealth Games, a team of Karachi vehicle decorators have transformed a regular Melbourne tram into a W-11 Karachi style mini-bus. The W-11 is running along the city circle route in the CBD of Melbourne. The tram ride is free.

The tram is decked out in flowers and layers of cut out vibrant vinyl patterns and covered in flashing LCD lighting. Then there is the music. Loud popular music from Pakistan complement this amazing project to complete the W-11 experience.
