Apocalypse Wow! Judgement day frescoes at the Rila Monastery – Bulgaria

The Rila Monastery in Bulgaria is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and perhaps the most well known structure in the country. When you enter the monastery it just looks like an old fort and it doesn’t prepare you for the view that is inside.

Rila Monastery - Bulgaria

The monastery is famous for its frescoes by Bulgarian artist Zahari Zograf. The external porch walls of the main church is covered in colourful religious imagery.

Much of the subject matter is of apocalyptic last judgement images. Bat-winged demons and gruesome death scenes are prominent. There are so many little details, so spending some time looking over every detail of each panel reveals some pretty bizarre interpretations of what the apocalypse would look like.

The Rila Monastery is an easy day trip from Sofia. There are tours that go there but the cheapest way is to get a local bus which will take you straight there in 2 and a half hours.

The inner beauty of Italian Churches

The Cathedral of Bergamo (Duomo di Bergamo) is an unassuming building on the outside which gives no hint of its magnificence inside.

This is typical of cathedrals and churches in Italy. This means that every time I walk past a seemingly unremarkable church I can’t help but have a peek inside because you never know what lies within.

St Petrus and Paulus Church, Ostend – Belgium

St Petrus And Paulus Church, Ostend (Oostende) - Belgium.
[St Petrus and Paulus Church]

Ostend (Oostende) on a windswept November day is not the first place you would think of visiting, but these are the things you sometimes find yourself doing when you have a railpass.

Being a major port it was bombed during the Second World War. Wandering around the streets you can see small hints that this place was once grander than it is now. There is a large sandy beach here which is popular in the summer.

Church of good books – Maastricht

There are thousands of beautiful old churches across Europe, but many of them lack the funds and worshippers to maintain them, and they end up decaying beyond repair. So I thought this bookshop in Maastricht makes for a good compromise.

The Selexys bookstore chain has converted this old Dominican church into a bookstore. They have English language books in store and it is a pleasing environment to browse books in.

Old Goa

Away from the beach resorts of Goa is the interesting town of Old Goa. Old Goa was the capital of Goa in the time of Portuguese rule and it was said to be as grand as Lisbon. You would never guess that looking at it today. The city was abandoned in 1843 and the capital moved to Panaji, the present day capital of Goa.

All that remains today is a collection of churches and cathedrals. What is striking about Old Goa is all the open space between these historic buildings, which you do not see in other Indian cities. A highlight of Old Goa is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which houses the well preserved remains of St Francis Xavier, who died in 1552 on the Island of Sancian, off the coast of China.
